This very attractive grass, 12 inches high and 12-18 inches in diameter, forms a soft tussock of very narrow, chestnut-red leaves in spring. These fade somewhat as the season progresses and in summer many delicate flower/seed spikes are produced. The soft, rounded 'cushion' of this grass was a magnet for one of our cats, Adora (sadly now no longer with us, after a long, relaxed life), who would be found curled up in the middle of a tussock, fast asleep.
Sowing and/or growing instructions
Sow in spring in pots or modules of good quality, moist compost. The protection of a cold-frame is beneficial, but not essential, but generally this is an easy plant to grow. Mature plants can be divided in late spring or early summer, when growth is active. This is also a good time to tidy plants by gently pulling away old foliage and seed stems, which will be much lighter in colour than the new growth. |
